Exorbitant
dollars spent
inexorably
bringing outside
in,
perfuming days
the grey of a hastily erased
chalkboard.
-
White tulips tight and virginal
heave and drape
at the mildest suggestion
of heat;
trembling cherry blossoms
their fleeting beauty
a wake-up call to consciousness;
quince blossoms
begging contemplation
of life’s potentials
bitter as the fruit
gossamer as the flower;
a magnolia branch
tall, isolated
pilfered
from an abandoned lot
its leaves as magnanimous
as its bear paw of a flower.
-
Tinkling gutters
keep seasonal time
the delighted screech
of drenched birds,
glistening citrus
the soggy longing of
the camellia flower
enveloped in winter.

The quince blossoms unfurl
in the warm room
their branches trembling from
Pictures at an Exhibition
hurtling from unseen speakers
like the D Train rattling teacups
in a West Village walk-up.
Even the talents
of Maurice Ravel
could not rescue
Mussorgsky’s muddled mess,
its ten movements
longer than a Moscow winter.

Decades ago
tulips and daffodils dancing
on the Common,
a symphony
a first date
a last day of school
a warm Boston evening
a fine dining room
his small hands and large bravado
like a tiny Nantucket scallop
in its grande white shell.
A stripped bed
an empty dormitory
the rustling plastic
of a mattress cover
echoing across cheap pine desks
down cinderblock hallways,
the dullness of the the Russian’s keystrokes
ringing in my ears.

Winter breakfast of roasted Japanese sweet potato and cipollini onion tossed in @hudsonnapavalley olio nuovo, with my three favorite C’s (cumin, coriander, caraway) and made Hephaestus-hot with dried peppers 🌶 from summer’s haul, ground to fiery flakes.

Mark Felt was the Number Two guy at the FBI under Hoover. He saw it all. He also felt the FBI had a very clear agenda for the country tied to a notion of service which didn’t necessarily include the antics of Watergate. Late in life, he came out as Deep Throat, the man who gave the Washington Post the details that led to RMN’s resignation.
Woodward, Bernstein, Graham, Bradlee and Mark Felt.
Almost seems quaint now, don’t it?

“A tulip doesn’t strive to impress anyone. It doesn’t struggle to be different than a rose. It doesn’t have to. It is different. And there’s room in the garden for every flower. You didn’t have to struggle to make your face different than anyone else’s on earth. It just is. You are unique because you were created that way.”

Grey skies
and a wolf moon
usher in a new calendar
to a world in marked
disarray
and my shuddering
hormonal shift.
-
That space
that chasm
that abyss
we each have
always so easily
filled
buried
choked;
by food
delectable morsels
of which my cabinets are
stocked
chock full;
by booze
a gauze of single malt
draped over my twenties
and
the tannic browning edges
of mid-age
awash in aged wine;
by pot
lots and lots
of dope
good sativa ganja
grown under the CA sun
elevating me to myself.
-
But fifty-plus struck hard
tired
cranky forgetful
hollowed out
emotionally raw
menopausal.
None of my tricks
habits
junkie tendencies
are filling the void,
my tolerance built up
filled up
topped up
covered up
and covered over.
