Oh to be an oysterman!
Foggy dawns,
cold fingertips,
wet socks,
knife on the hip,
bivalves on the table;
shiny seal pates
puncturing the bay’s stillness
with snorting exhales;
smiling pelicans,
beseeching gulls,
preening loons,
manic mures,
and thousands of egrets
dotting sandbars
like oversized pearls on a
Marin housewife’s necklace;
black ducks
wings spread towards their Mecca,
absolving themselves
of the inherent nature
of their wetness.

Too tiny manila clams
steamed in delicate salmon stock
made hearty
with fistfuls
of chopped garlic,
Italian parsley,
hot smoked paprika
and dill fronds;
served with a blonde from Beaune
and mopping up bread
studded with sesame.

Sighting a scope
pulling a trigger
tying a fly
setting a hook
wielding a knife
wringing a neck
baiting a trap
swinging a trout priest
inspire contemplation
of vegetarianism.

Never can I eat
on the same day
what I took for the pot,
the stink of death
on my hands
needing a day
to resolve
profound remorse
into joyful gratitude.
