In this month of Leo,
blue jays
freshly minted
fall from trees
bop on unsure legs,
untested wings
just the cats’ meow.
A Sunday devoted
to ensuring safe passage
skyward
a tiny service
in our small scheme.

Sense
none of it makes
except when glanced
in the rearview
of my old wagon
on a long solo drive,
where all the islands
of choice
line up
into stepping stones
leading into our garden
cradling a baby bird
on a warm August day.

I’m on the hunt to rent/trade/lease a small plot of land (anywhere from 40’ x 40’ to 100’ x 100’) in the Napa area to raise and experiment with different varieties of allium, most specifically garlic.
Organic/natural land is sought and fencing and drip irrigation is a plus.
Would need to ready the land in September for October planting.
Harvest is early summer (depending upon variety).
Any leads, ideas and offers are greatly appreciated.

Before the fog pulls away
its steel cloak of coolness,
the oven is stoked
with yellowing headlines
of heartache
and pine cones
the size of footballs
scrounged from the Sierras
and dried till brittle.

A dozen eggplants,
a skillet of tiny tomatoes,
and a cast iron
of circus colored carrots
bedazzled
with
coriander, caraway,
cumin and cayenne
sizzle
splatter
singe.
