Before the fog pulls away
its steel cloak of coolness,
the oven is stoked
with yellowing headlines
of heartache
and pine cones
the size of footballs
scrounged from the Sierras
and dried till brittle.

a skillet of tiny tomatoes,
and a cast iron
of circus colored carrots
bedazzled
with
coriander, caraway,
cumin and cayenne
sizzle
splatter
singe.
