Arrived late, slept late, arose ravenous. Walked to an old haunt for a very late lunch or an absurdly early supper depending on jet lagged perspective.

Gawd, was it a functional meal; in truth a shit meal, a wasted gastronomic opportunity for delight in a city rife with them.

The restaurant was enshrined in memory from years spent living around its corner; diminutive, delicious, Japanese. But the sad realization was that it’s like an Ice Cube, those small square chocolates individually wrapped in blue and gold foil and sold on the counter of every packy on the eastern seaboard. Then it was a huge treat, a chocolate bomb that melted on the tongue, coating the mouth in a slick sweetness. Now I recognize it’s akin to eating a dog turd.

Like an older lover taken in one’s youth, it’s often advisable to not revisit but to tighten the rose-colored glasses of mid-age, retain the delightful memory, and forge anew.
