The clang of hammers
metal on metal
echo across the bay
rebuilding battered piers
for summer’s season.
The slap of briny sea
against a rocky beach,
its irregular pebbles
reflecting the evening hues
of a Turner painting.
Narrow walkways lining
narrower streets
hugged by cliffs
steeped in history
ring picturesque town
after town,
riddled with architecture
mottled by tourists
over thousands of years.
In this land of Mary
encased in glass
on every corner,
it is whole roasted fish,
Ligurian lemons and
cheap white wine
that sate
this thirsty traveler’s
soul.
