A forest symphony
on constant loop
beckons,
a siren call
for the world weary;
strings of redwood boughs,
winds in the canopy
cymbals of the Pacific,
the baritone of the owl,
the dramatic soprano of crows and hawks,
their score making it clear
we are not alone
and finally silencing
the noise
in my head.

(at Timber Cove, California)
Half past eight
in the A.M.
found me at a local college
for CPR certification.
Five minutes into
an introductory movie
showing a resuscitation
in progress,
I was dizzy with thoughts
of heart and lungs and brains.
Head spinning,
heart pounding,
workbook in hand,
I bolted,
the last words heard
“You get the paddles
and I’ll shave his chest.”
-
Once home,
breath returned to normal
with the nurturing help of
green tea,
green bud and
the relatively peaceful work of
resuscitating
the bland aesthetic
of the Christmas honey jars,
stamping a brass bee
into hot beeswax.

(at At Home in Napa)
Excited to be taking part in this event organized by curator-extraordinary and author Sarah Lonsdale and ceramist Richard Carter. I’ll have a few culinary treasures from my travels as part of a lineup of more than 25 designers and artisans offering interesting wares. Several workshops will be taking place, including a bitters how-to, a wreath making session, and a kids ornament-making class with Nimbus Arts. They’ll be freshly cut Silvertip Christmas trees for sale and Houtskool’s Pop Up Dumpling House will be serving dumplings both days. Hope you can join us!
