Into the darkness of winter we’re thrown,
its merciless, greedy claws snatching away
everything we’ve known
of summer.
Eventually
our racking sobs of grief subside
and we understand innately
while Earth will continue to orbit the sun
the sun never shines on iniquity.
We must prepare for untold months ahead
wrapping tightly in warm hide and thick velvet,
filling canteens with whiskey and water
and hearts and minds with the wisdom of nature,
words whispered by ancestors
impatient for us to embrace
to celebrate
the truths of humanity
of love
of beauty
in all forms.
This landmark building was constructed during the Gothic Revival architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England and continued into the early 19th century. In contrast to the popular neoclassical architecture, Gothic Revival draws features from the original Gothic style, including decorative patterns, finials, scalloping, lancet windows, hood mouldings, and label stops.

Anna Zinkeisen (1901-1976) was a portrait painter and a muralist, creating murals for the ocean liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. She later specialized in pathological and clinical drawing and worked in the casualty ward in St. Mary’s Hospital in London during the horrors of World War II. She often painted in a disused operating theater there.
Self-portrait, 1944.
